Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the participants and guests of the IX BRICS Legal Forum 2024 emphasizing the growing demand for direct, informal communication among authoritative legal scholars and practicing lawyers from BRICS countries, especially in light of the recent expansion of the bloc. The theme of this year’s forum, «Law for a Just World,» aligns with Russia’s priorities in BRICS and the collective aim of the member states to foster a truly democratic, multipolar world order based on clear and binding legal norms.
In his greeting, which was read by Sergey Stepashin, the Chair of the Russian Lawyers Association, Putin highlighted the forum’s broad agenda covering international justice, legal education, trade and investment law, intellectual property, and mechanisms for resolving cross-border commercial disputes. He expressed confidence that the discussions would be meaningful and constructive, and that the proposed initiatives would contribute to the development of mutually beneficial partnerships among BRICS nations.
The forum, organized by the Russian Lawyers Association, MGIMO University, and Kutafin University, has been held annually since 2014 as a platform for legal cooperation and professional exchange among BRICS lawyers, promoting «legal diplomacy» and collaboration with international organizations and legal institutions.
